• The Apple IIgs commercial gaming market is dead, just like the 8-bit Apple II or Commodore 64 market. Whoever would have bought IIgs games from between 1986 and 1992, the games held within this archive, would have already done so by now. How would copying these IIgs games in 2001 effect either the companies, distributors or retailers that had once brought us IIgs games last decade? It doesn't affect anyone. Except that now many more people can now enjoy IIgs gaming than just IIgs users. And that an archive of these games be made for posterity, preventing them to disappear into the mists of time. I think that's aiming for the greater good, instead of leaving these games to rot, languishing in a heap of red tape. Having said that, however, it is up to the discretion and responsibility of each individual user as to what they will download.

• I realise that many in the Apple II online community frown incredibly upon "pirating" IIgs software. I would just like to say I respect your opinion, as long as you respect mine. We should agree to disagree and leave it at that. The only person or people who have a right to pick a bone with me are those who developed the game, and if they disapprove that their software be made publicly available for free, please contact me. I have made every effort to respect IIgs game developers within this archive, to the point where I've made great efforts in removing all crack screens and researching who worked on each game. Each developers' efforts have not been exploited, as I will make no profit from this venture whatsoever. As a matter of fact, it's been at my expense: the expense of time.

• I also realise that some people worry that such public distribution of no longer available IIgs games will lead to the public distribution of IIgs games that have recently been developed and are still being sold. You have no need to fear. I'll be checking everything that is submitted to this archive and it will not be made publically available if it is still sold by a distributor, assuming it was released after 1991. You will not find LemminGS or Kaboom! (when it's released) within any part of this archive.

• OK, so there is one place on the Net (that I've found) that still sell their remaining stock of mainstream IIgs games dated between 1986 to 1990: Wayne's Computer Store.

• This page is more dedicated to emulating the IIgs, not necessarily catering for users of real IIgs machines. It's no use complaining to me if you can't view the page properly with the text browser Lynx or the Spectrum Internet Suite. The page was designed to take advantage of 'modern' graphical browsers and isn't meant to be viewed with anything else.

• Everything is based on opinion, whether it be slagging off a game or praising another. They're just that, opinions. Look the word up in the dictionary.

• Some information may not be entirely accurate. I do specialise in useless, trivial knowledge and I do cross reference my memory with Apple II journals. If errors are found, I would appreciate corrections from other users, as long as they're presented in a tactful manner :-)

Q. What is a 2image (.2mg)? What is a ShrinkIt (.SHK) archive?

A. As you may have noticed, the Fairway includes both 2images and ShrinkIt archives.

2images are the standard for disk images for IIgs emulators (i.e. more widely known as ROMs, although that term is incorrect in regards to the IIgs, as the platform never used game cartridges). In short, if you wish to emulate the Apple IIgs, you would prefer to download 2images for use with those emulators.

ShrinkIt, on the other hand, is the 'native' archive and compression format of the Apple IIgs (as .zip is to Windows, or StuffIt to the Mac). These archives have been provided for all who still wish to use their original IIgs hardware. You would download the ShrinkIt archives to your PC or Mac and using one of the methods discussed below, would transfer those archives to your IIgs.


Q. How come you don't have Taipei, Airheart, Wings of Fury, Karateka, etc on the Fairway?

A. These games were not specifically made for the Apple IIgs, rather, they were made for the 8-bit Apple II+, IIe or IIc. The Fairway is only concerned with games that will run only on the Apple IIgs. Try looking for those programs on the Asimov archive.


Q. Why don't you have Music Construction Set, Paintworks Gold, Music Studio, Appleworks GS, etc on the Fairway?

A. The Fairway solely deals with Apple IIgs games; not applications. To include applications, in the same manner as I've included games in the Fairway with box art, screen shots and documentation, would open an entirely new can of worms that I feel would be best passed on to other people. If someone is willing to start such a venture, in a way similar to the Fairway, I would support it as best I can in the time I have available.


Q. I've just bought a real IIgs and want to play all these games, but I don't know where to start.

A. I'd love to be able to help, but I don't have the time to help with individual requests such as this. If you're new to the Apple IIgs, your first port of call should be the usenet newsgroup comp.sys.apple2. There, virtually all of your questions can be answered.


Q. I have a Windows based PC and I'm wanting to copy the 2image archives and/or the ShrinkIt archives to a real Apple IIgs. How do I do this?

A. There are several ways. If the archives you want to move are small enough, and you have an Applied Engineering Super Drive with high density controller card on your Apple IIgs with System 6, you could simply copy the files across by floppy. In all likelihood, you will not have this setup.

The most likely way is to null modem across the files, in which case you'll need communications software for your PC and a good communications program for your Apple IIgs, preferably ProTerm or Spectrum. You could download files across using z-modem. Please don't ask me HOW to transfer the files from this point. From memory, ProTerm had a built in feature that supported file transfer via null modem. But it's been a good five years since I've done this and I can't remember any more than that.

The only other solution is to get a SCSI interface card for your IIgs and for your PC. You could then copy files to an external hard drive or Zip disk from your PC, then stick the drive onto your IIgs with System 6 to copy the files there.


Q. I've got a Mac and I want to transfer files across to my IIgs. How can this be done?

A. Well, if you've got a Mac with a standard built in floppy drive nothing could be easier. Simply format a disk (note that it must be a double density disk!) for HFS or ProDOS, copy files to that disk on your Mac then take the disk and copy the files onto the IIgs with System 6. You could also LocalTalk the two machines with a standard Apple serial cable, setting your Mac to Fileshare and you'll be able to view that machines's shared volumes from the IIgs with Appletalk enabled.

If you've got an iMac, G3, G4, iBook, Powerbook (1999 and upwards models) you're limited to one option. The only way to transfer files between a IIgs and any of those Macs is via a SCSI storage device meaning you'll need to buy SCSI cards for both your Mac AND your IIgs. Buying a USB floppy drive for your iMac, G3, G4, etc, will NOT work with standard IIgs double density floppy disks.


Q. I've worked out a way to exchange files between my IIgs and PC, but how can I create disk images used for emulators?

A. Easy. Simply download ImageMaker, an application for your Apple IIgs and make the images directly on your IIgs! Then copy them over for use with XGS or KEGS.


Q. I've downloaded heaps of the 2image archives for emulation, but I also want to play these games on my original IIgs. Is there any way to convert 2images to a format a real IIgs can use, and save me the time of downloading the ShrinkIt archives?

A. Yes. Ninjaforce's terrific little utility 'Asimov' can do just that.


Q. I've downloaded a game, but whenever I try to run it, an error message appears saying 'Unable to load ProDOS'. What gives?

A. The answer is that there is no bootable operating system on the disk. You will need to have a system disk, preferably System 6. Download this full System 6 hard drive image.


Q. My favourite game refuses to work in XGS/Bernie ][ the Rescue! I've tried everything I can think of and all the emulator settings!

A. You might be totally out of luck. Emulation being what is, imperfect, it's possible your favourite game won't work under emulation.


Q. I don't own a real IIgs and XGS won't run game x properly. Do you know where I could get the PC version of game x?

A. Your best bet is to search the Net for 'Abandon Warez' sites. That's all the help I can give you.
